Peripheral Neuropathy
Are you one of over 30 million people in the US who are affected with Peripheral Neuropathy? If so we can help!
Peripheral Neuropathy 101:
The nervous system has two parts. 1.The central nervous system - the brain and spinal cord And 2. the peripheral nervous system which includes the nerves that run from the brain and spinal cord out to the rest of the body. This controls your hands, legs and feet and is responsible for sensation and motor control.
Peripheral neuropathy occurs when these peripheral nerves are damaged.
Peripheral Neuropathy symptoms usually start with numbness, prickling or tingling in the toes or fingers. It may spread up to the feet or hands and cause burning, freezing, throbbing and/or shooting pain that is often worse at night.
The pain can be either constant or occasional, but generally the pain is felt equally on both sides of the body—in both hands or in both feet. Some types of peripheral neuropathy develop suddenly, while others progress more slowly over many years.
The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy often include:
-
A sensation of wearing an invisible “glove” or “sock”
-
Burning sensation or freezing pain
-
Sharp, jabbing, shooting, or electric-like pain
-
Extreme sensitivity to touch
-
Difficulty sleeping because of feet and leg pain
-
Loss of balance and coordination
-
Muscle weakness
-
Muscle cramping/twitching
-
Difficulty walking or moving the arms
-
Unusual sweating
-
Abnormalities in blood pressure or pulse
Peripheral Neuropathy is most often a result of Diabetes, or the after effects of chemotherapy treatment. Sometimes it is a manifestation of a low back issue.
Most people experiencing peripheral neuropathy see an MD/DO, Podiatrist or Neurologist and will be prescribed either over the counter or prescription medications for pain relief. In some cases a nerve block is provided via injection. There are also many alternative treatments available. Most of the treatment options for peripheral neuropathy do not address the cause but only treat the symptoms.
As your Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes Clinic our passion is to address both the symptoms AND the cause of the issue. Why is this important? To avoid the too frequent peripheral neuropathy results of foot ulcers, devastating falls and even amputations. These are unacceptable outcomes to us.
Our unique treatment includes a thorough assessment and foot scan followed by a report of Dr. Nelson’s findings. If you are a candidate for care our treatment provides: nerve stimulation, increased blood flow, the very best nutrition (supplementation) and provides you with compliance so that you experience positive results.
We believe an active lifestyle is essential to wellbeing. Let us show you how!
